The Herbert School of Polish Language and Culture in Palos Heights, IL was established in 2015 in response to the growing demand and needs of the residents of the southwest suburbs of Chicago.

Our school’s program implements a curriculum especially created in 2010 by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Poland for students learning Polish outside of Poland. Our curriculum also prepares our students for the Polish language certification exam administered by the Polish Consulate each year. This certification is the only nationally recognized document confirming knowledge and proficiency of the Polish language.

We are an institution that provides the highest quality education, modern teaching methods, and programs tailored to the individual needs of students. At our school, the teachers' primary goals are language competence and development of effective communication in both speech and in writing. Proficient use of the Polish language will provide our students access to and complete understanding of literary texts, as well as familiarity with rich Polish history, culture and art.

After-school activities and clubs are also available to students.

In addition to teaching Polish language and culture, the Herbert School also offers religious education in Polish, supervised by Fr. Ryszard (Richard) Groń, PhD. Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Palos Hills, IL.

School Patron

Herbert School of Polish Language and Culture in Palos Heights, IL was named after a famous Polish poet, essayist, drama writer and moralist, Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998).

Zbigniew Herbert was a member of the Polish resistance movement known as the “Home Army, (AK)” during World War II. He is one of the best known and the most translated post-war Polish writers. Herbert first published his writings in the 1950s (a volume titled “String of Light” issued in 1956), but soon after voluntarily ceased submitting most of his works to official Polish, then-communist, government publications. He resumed publishing at the dusk of the communist era in the 1980s, initially in the underground press.

Zbigniew Herbert

Zbigniew Herbert was educated as an economist, lawyer and philosopher. He has earned more than twenty literary awards from around the world and his works have been translated into 38 languages. On July 1, 2007 the Polish Government declared 2008 as the Year of Zbigniew Herbert.
